How to Properly Measure Your Knee Center Height

  1. While standing, locate the center of the knee cap (patella). At that height, move your fingers around to the outside of the knee joint about midway between the knee cap and the back of the knee. You should be able to feel the depression between the lower part of the femur (lateral epicondyle) and the head of the tibia (lateral condyle).
    1. When you have found this point, have the subject flex the knee to confirm that you have the correct location.
    2. Your finger will move to the rear if it is positioned below the head of the tibia and you should move your finger above that protuberance.
    3. If your finger is to high, you will not feel motion on both sides of your finger as the head of the tibia moves past the lower part of the femur.
    4. It is advisable to mark this location with a washable marker if possible.
  2. Position the short edge of the square next to the outside of the knee so that the mark made in the step above is even with the bottom of the square and the long side extends up the wall.
  3. Place a mark on the masking tape under the bottom of the square.
  4. Mark this point “KH”
