Steel-it’s the material our heroes Giamondi, Merckx, Anquetil, Bobet, and Coppi all rode to victory in the grand tours and classics. For the purists nothing will ever be better than steel. Steel has mystique, it is old world, old school and unequaled in its ride quality. Remember standing in the bike shop dreaming of that Cinelli chromed SLX frame with Super Record and then settling for a entry level Bianchi with Shimano 105 or worse Exage? Whether it was Ciöcc, Cinelli, Colnago, or Merckx, we all dreamed of that super high end steel frame set that would make us go faster, sprint better, or climb with a little less pain, but how many of us got to own one of these? For decades the professionals only rode steel, but it was heavy. Then came titanium, but it was flex, and while an incredibly plush ride, it was not crisp like steel. Aluminum and carbon have supplanted steel and even titanium as the frame materials of choice, but none give you the ride qualities of steel.
Although materials come and go in popularity, steel remains one of the best racing frame materials available. Steel is a crisp, precise ride that dampens the vibration of our all too often, not so perfect road surfaces while still delivering a ride that is classic yet refined.
